Company Baranjski voćnjaci d.o.o. is a member of  WerkosGroup, which is specialised in production of high quality virus-free, certificated fruit trees. With production of almost 900.000 plants it is certanly amongst leading nurseries in Southeastern Europe. Production programme on 40 hectares includes 1-year-old and 2-year-old well-branched KNIP apple trees, as well as other fruit varieties. We are combining our professional expertise with the implementation of new technology and experience, always maintaining the compliance with ali relevant EU rules and standards in nursery production.

In cooperation with N.V. Johan Nicolai, KIKU Ltd. [Braun-apple), V.NL (Stichting vermeerderingstuinen Nederland) and others, we have extended our product range to include the newest and currently most popular apple varieties on European market, thus positioning our production programme at the very top of nursery production in the Southeastern European region. Our company is currently engaged in some of the biggest projects of planting new orchards in Croatia and in the neighbouring countries, and is exporting big part of its nursery production in EU countries.

This production represents significant contribution in raising long term competitiveness of domestic fruit growers in soon to be European market, through increase in their anual crop yield and cost optimisation.

V.F. – CERT.

V.F. – Virus free, CERTIFICATED trees produced from graftwood and rootstocks that origine from elite virusfree mother trees produced using thermotherapy processing. Such health status guarantees that material that the trees are produced of, is not infected with any known and production damaging virus. Research has shown that virus free material gives in average up to 17% more anual crop in its life span.

KNIP TREE

Knip tree with premature branches (5+ and 7+), their optimal (circular) layout and high branching treshold - 65cm to 125cm from the ground level, as well as genetic potential of pure clones ensure faster entering in full croping fase, which automaticaly guarantees earlier financial break-even. Such material demands minimal costs in future pruning and form shaping of the trees. This can reduce pomotechnical operations and cost by 30-35%.

High grafted rootstocks

High grafted rootstocks (M9 – T337) 38+ cm on proper way prevents tree vigor which regulates and optimises transport of nutrition elements within the tree and gives balance between growth and fruit production.

Apple Variety selection

Apple varieties in our fruit-tree nursery are in conformity with climate and pedological characteristics of our region (Jonagold, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala, Braeburn, Fuji, etc.). Besides that, their clonal selection is also carefully selected (Reinders, Crielaard, Royal Beaut Proselect, Kiku 8, Red Cap Valtod, Morren's Jonagored Supra, Novajo, Dacosta, Wiltons Red Jonaprince etc.) and it represents best most popular new varieties in Europe today. To future apple growers such varieties open the way to European markets as well as possibities of satisfying other more demanding markets and consumers. Also the price of those varieties that producer can achieve on the market is much higher in comparison to old and common varieties like Idared.

Licence

Licence presents right given from the owner of the variety to produce and sell fruit-trees of that variety, all according to the rules of the club or the owner. To the future producer such licence gives safety in origin and genetical pureness of buds from which the trees are produced and which came from authorised mothertree of the variety owner.

Licenced fruit-tree also grants the future right to sell the fruit under it's proper name, which means better selling prices and possiblity of export and sales to the market chains which through EU agricultural standards (like GLOBALGAP) demand proof of tree origin and production licence.

Virgin soil

Production of fruit-trees is made on virgin soils which means that, in accordance with EU standards and pratice, every production cycle begins on a new soil on which no other nursery or fruit production existed before. Such pratice in great deal affects the quality of the trees, not just in the sense of it's external qualities (branching, height, conditioning of the tree) but also prevents possibities of viral and bacterial disease which can be common on „tired“ soils, ones that are used for fruit or nursery production in the past. Experiments of EU producers have shown that even after 12 years the potential of growth and development on such soils is reduced for over 40%.

Infrastructure

Irrigation and fertirigation systems insure the needed prerequisites for achieving constant plant growth in drought periods of the year and helps keeping optimal tree development throughout the vegatation. Delivery of contracted trees and quality is guaranteed, despite potential negative weather conditions, because trees are by means of regular and timed fertirigation optimally conditioned before the end of vegetative cycle. This also ensures proper forming of sufficent number of flower buds.

In cooperation with our foreign partners NV Johan Nicolai (Belgium) – owner of few well known new clones and varieties like Kanzi, Early Jonagold, Greenstar, Gala royal beaut, Pirouette, Thomas and Jurgen Braun (Italy – Braun Apple) owners of some of the most popular new club varieties like Fuji Kiku 8, Red Cap Valtod, etc.., Dalmonte Vivai (Italy), Papiniers Escande (France) we have implemented new technologies and reached EU standards in nursery production.

Apple

Jabuka je najzastupljenija voćna vrsta u Hrvatskoj. Naš se proizvodni sortiment odnosi na najpoznatije klonove baznih sortimenata (Zlatni delišes, Gala, Fuji, Jonagold, Braeburn, Crveni delišes). Za svaku sortu osigurana su prava oplemenjivača koja će biti neophodna za sadnju voćnjaka prilikom skorog ulaska u EU.

Riječ je o dobro razgranatim (jednogodišnjim i dvogodišnjim KNIP) sadnicama vrhunske kvalitete, koje garantiraju raniji ulazak u rodnost voćke, koja u drugoj godini poslije sadnje sa 5-8 kg osigurava znatno raniji povrat investicije. Takav sadni materijal zahtijeva minimalne zahvate pri budućoj rezidbi i formiranju uzgojnog oblika stabla, tako da se u budućim pomotehničkim radnjama na plantaži troškovi smanjuju za čak 30-35%.

Pear

U našem rasadniku proizvodimo i jednogodišnje sadnice breskve i nektarine na podlozi GF 677, nastaloj križanjem breskve i bajama, koja je otporna na visoke postotke aktivnog vapna u tlu, što je česta pojava u našim krajevima, inače pogodnima za proizvodnju koštićavog voća. Radi se o novim sortama koje karakterizira dobra obojenost, visok rodni potencijal i postotak 1. klase, te koje su uz to izuzetno atraktivne, kako za domaće, tako i za europsko tržište.

Irrigation

The base of every well designed irrigation system is the idea. A good design idea primarily ensures that the irrigation system is efficient and balanced and as well that the end users will get financialy the optimal solution. In that way the amount of water will be distributed through the most rational system in terms of cost of infrastructure and energy.

Once the design ideas are determined, our engineering team starts designing the hydraulic design, using the map of the orchard provided by the buyer / investor, and with help of software tools for dimensionioning the system. It is necessary to adjust pressure and flow in the system, and eventually the system needs to be divided into smaller segments, with the aim of bringing optimal amount of water to plants.

The amount of water is specific for each culture and depends on its evapotranspiration factor. In order to meet those specific needs for water and depending on the plant and microclimatic characteristics of the orchard where grown all the details need to be agreed with the buyer depending on his technology before we define the final solution our recommendations.

Up to 50% increase of yield can be achived with irrigation! Werkos group besides producing planting material also successfully develops and sets up (installs) irrigation systems. One of the first and primary investment of each fruit grower is investment in irrigation equipment and therefore it is very important to choose an appropriate method of irrigation. From the fruit production aspect it is usually a drip irrigation system.

Werkos group in cooperation with Eurodrip, a renowned European manufacturer of irrigation equipment offers a system for drip irrigation of the highest quality. Primarily a few important items are included:

  • Drippers with compensated pressure, so that each fruit received the same fixed amount of water regardless of the length of lines or height difference
  • Fertigation system, which is not required for irrigation systems, but it enables the water-soluble fertilizers to be distributed in strictly controlled concentrations to each plant individually through the irrigation system
  •     
  • Filtration system as the most important part of the irrigation system is tailored to each individual source of water to ensure the functionality of the whole system over a longer period. Irrigation system may work for some time without filtration but this way it would soon be blocked by mechanical sludge and become unusable.

In addition to the drip system, Werkos also offers micro-sprincler irrigation or some of the mobile irrigation systems (hose reels, pivot or linear). The most important thing we must mention is that every offer is based on the hydraulic project and calculation that rationalize the required amount of water and the cost of materials and energy because that is the only way the final customer achieves the desired long-term sustainable results.

Irrigation systems

It is important to choose a proper way of irrigation in order to achieve the optimum price and performance..

First of all, it is important to accept that any system of irrigation implies the availability of large amounts of water. In practice, this often means that users need a resevoir (acumulation) for irrigation (that will create a reserve for a minimum amount of water for their plantation). Werkos Group is specialized in buiding impermeable reservoirs, and as such is able to offer customers complete solutions for irrigation..

When water source is no longer a problem, a suitable equipment for irrigation needs to be selected..

The basic types of irrigation systems are:

  1. Drip systems (micro-irrigation)
  2. Mobile irrigation systems
  • Hose reels
  • Pivot Systems
  • Linear systems

Drip systems (drop by drop)

Drip irrigation system is actualy a drop by drop micro-irrigation which also means that it provides most rational use of water and energy compared to other methods of irrigation.

The basic determinants for successful functioning of the drip system are:

  1. Plant Culture - If you select the drip system as the best way of irrigation, depending whether you need it for a long term or seasonal plantation you need to select tubes with integrated dropper or disposable strip for irrigation.
  2. Water quality - water quality is the next most important factor in defining the actual system because it directly determines the choice of filters for the functioning of the drip system.
  3. Arrangement of crops – the way crops are arranged is basic determinant for the distribution of droppers in the pipe in order to achieve an evenly moist zone in the root system.
  4. Soil type - affects the vertical infiltration of water and also affects the selection of an adequate space between the droppers.

A quality supplier will most certainly draw attention to his customers that there is an additional advantage of the drip system: the possibility of adding water-soluble fertilizers and droppers with pressure compensation. Using this advantages each plant gets the same amount of water regardless of the difference in altitude of the terrain and the length of individual lines.

FILTRATION SYSTEM

Filtration system as the most important part of the system is tailored to each individual source of water to ensure the functionality of the whole system over a longer period. Irrigation system may work for some time without filtration but this way they would soon be blocked by mechanical sludge and become unusable.

Reservoirs and Channel INFRASTRUCTURE

Even though these systems require a significantly larger amount of water than most people expect the most rational way of irrigation is certainly the drip system. In mobile irrigation systems water consumption is even higher. Although Croatia is a country with rich water potential, it is difficult to get the required amount of water directly from wells at once, and in the right time when needed. It is often necessary to create an accumulation of water in the quantity that represents a reservation for a minimum of one to two meals of irrigation.

Werkos therefore offers the creation of lagoons and canals insulated with special geomembrane to ensure their watertightness.

Self-compensating drippers

The length of lines and altitudes of the terrain on which the orchard is located substantially reduce the initial pressure of the pump which injects water into the irrigation system.

Self-compensating dripers or dripper with compensated pressure guarantee that each plant in the orchard regardless of the length of lines and possible differences in altitude receives the same amount of water. Their silicone membrane takes over the differences in pressure that occur in the system, and the result is always the same, predetermined and strictly controlled flow. In addition, variations in pressure give such a dropper a self-cleaning property of any minor impurities that enter into their canals. Therefore, an dippers with pressure compensation are the latest word in technology for drip irrigation.

Fertigation

It is impossible to imagine fruit production without the addition of natural or artificial fertilizers to ensure sufficient nutrients for plants. As in everything, as well there are modern solutions for fertilizers and fertiligation is most certnaly included. Although the name somewhat complicated, it is actually a very simple and elegant way of supplemental feeding which consists of a reservoir in which the desired concentration of required amount of water soluble fertilizer is dissolved. Then such a solution is injected into the irrigation system so that each plant would get the needed amount of fertilizer through a regular cycle of irrigation through the dripper . This way the fruit grower has complete control over the amount of fertilizer which is received by each tree. Orchards that have irrigation and fertigation systems tend to have more than 50% higher yields in the first year of application.

Mobile systems

In larger agricultural areas mobile irrigation systems are generaly used. Their common feature is more water and energy consumption per unit of time but at the same time these systems have their advantages: they are not so sensitive to the blockage and provide greater automation of work.

Basic characteristics of mobile systems:

  • Different dimensions of pipes for different capacities of irrigation
  • Different height of structures depending on the adaptation of the subject plant culture
  • High stability of the structure provides a minimum sensitivity to the terrain irregularity

Mobile irrigation systems are designed so that their way of moving can cover the agricultural areas of different shapes.

Hail protection

Hail protection system is the only efficient, functional and cost-effective solution for long-term fruit production. Although initially setting up these systems means a significant investment, in the long term, this investment is considerably lower than financial crop insurance and it also guarantees a complete safety for your orchard.

In addition to stable yield, the other big benefit for your crop quality is prevention of sun burn appearance, since hail nets eliminate negative effects UV rays have on your production. It also helps you to avoid any damage to the bearing branches of the tree, that heavy hail can inflict.

Cooperation with manufacturers from Croatia and Italy resulted in constant improvement and development of new forms of hail protection systems. Therefore, in addition to standard systems we offer solutions for large row spacing and also for cases with heavy rainfall and humidity we can offer both rain and hail protection systems, as well as systems for vineyard protection.

This system represents the basis for a cost-effective and competitive agricultural production, because it directly affects the increase of its security and productivity.

Hail-net system types:

Standard system:

The most common form of orchard protection against hail. The main characteristic of this system is simplicity and strength. In terms of cost the standard system is probably most acceptable.

Flexible System (Elastic system):

It is used in orchards with large row spacing (> 4 m) and in areas where above-average frequent and strong hail can occur. Advantage of this system is the option to let the ice fall through the middle of the roof thus avoiding possible damage to the net due to ice weight.

System V-5

In regions with lack of light and heat and excessive rainfall, V-5 system is most commonly used. It removes the need for the central part of the roof. In this way it reduces the conditions favorable for disease development but it also insures good and uniform colouring in ripening stage of the crop.

Vineyard system

It is placed on existing structure of vineyards in a way that it is easy to move aside the net when working on the vineyard. Because of the appropriate distance between the net and grapes the risk of hiching tendrils in the protective net is reduced. In addition, the system also protects the grapes from birds.

Rain protection systems

It is used mainly for the protection of sweet and sour-cherry orchards. Below hail-net an impermeable foil is placed in oder to serve as protection from rain. Its structure is designed to fit into standard hail protection systems and it is easy to set up and remove after the harvest.
